Stressed out? Watch one \u2013 or fifty! \u2013 videos on Instagram of cute cats, dramatic dogs, or a perfectly organised pantry. Likes on our content can give us a definite serotonin boost, but data suggests that some people end up feeling the exact opposite:\u00a0<em>\u201cisolated, detached, and, well, sad.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jean Twenge PhD, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, claims that extensive amounts of time on social media is\u00a0<em>\u201clinked to depression and loneliness and unhappiness.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0What \u2013 if anything \u2013 can we do about it?<\/p>\n<p>Here are some pointers:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cultivate a safe space \u2013 only follow people and join groups that share your values and fit your needs. As soon as someone starts triggering you, unfollow them.<\/li>\n<li>Fight comparison syndrome \u2013 some advice suggests to only follow people you have met in person so that when you see them on a lavish holiday, you know how they got there. This can turn any jealousy or negative self-talk into positivity: your friend\u00a0<em>finally<\/em>\u00a0got to take that honeymoon!<\/li>\n<li>Consider your negativity threshold \u2013 before you publish, ask yourself the following questions: Am I willing to offend or irritate?
